For almost three decades the outside appearance of the SOS Children's Village Hermann Gmeiner Academy in Amras, on the outskirts of Innsbruck, has become familiar to many people. Its outer appearance changed slightly following a renovation in 2007, but it can still easily be recognised.
SOS Children's Villages – a non-profit organisation of global experience
This year, SOS Children's Villages will celebrate its sixtieth anniversary!
Everything started in 1949 with the vision of the young medical student Hermann Gmeiner and some courageous friends. They dreamed of providing a new home for children who, for various reasons, did not have the protection and security of their family of origin, and of offering them shelter and loving guidance. A mother, brothers and sisters, a house and a village that provide a strong network of reliable social relationships – this was their idea which is both simple and successful.
Today, SOS Children's Villages works in 132 countries and is the world's largest private child welfare organisation.
